Fall/Winter 2020 Style Guide: Tops/Sweaters
Welcome to my Fall/Winter 2020 Style Guide. If you are new here, I started making style guides a couple years ago to help make shopping and getting dressed easier. In college, I worked as a styling intern at Nordstrom where I learned a lot about the importance of having good quality and functional basics in your closet. I feel like fashion today can be so overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be!
If I were to go into someone's closet, throw out everything and have them start from scratch, these are the tops I would start with. I am not calling this a "capsule wardrobe" because I do like variety and do wear items that aren't on this list, but these several items are what I find myself reaching for about 80% of the time. With these styles, you will be able to create a wide variety of looks and get a ton of wear out of each individual piece.

CHUNKY KNIT SWEATER: by far my most worn item in my closet! Looks cute with everything. I highly recommend the free people option here but have found some other great options that are a lot less. Click through the images below to shop!
CROPPED SWEATER: this is a must-have item for me because of how versatile it is! Becasue the sweater is cropped it can easily be tucked into high-waisted jeans or skirts, but also looks so cute thrown over a dress. Because of the cropped fit there isn’t any extra fabric sitting around your mid section over the dress. I have a sweater like this that is not a cardigan, but I love this style because you can wear it buttoned up on its own, or open with a top underneath. Here are some of my favorite cropped sweaters
STRIPED SWEATER: with a closet full of neutrals and basics, stripes go with everything! I love this sweater and have already worn it a handful of times since getting it last week. Here are some of my favorite striped sweaters
FITTED CREWNECK SWEATER: This is a timeless piece. I could have worn this exact same sweater in 2012 with a totally different outfit, and I can wear it today with vintage wash jeans and a pair of ankle boots. It is important to me that this sweater is somewhat fitted and a lightweight material because I like to be able to wear it tucked into wide leg pants or high waisted jeans. These sweaters are really great options:
TUNIC TURTLENECK SWEATER: I love having something like this in my closet so that I can wear it with leggings when I want to be extra cozy but still look put together. Especially being pregnant I know I’m going to live in these sweaters all fall and winter. I love to wear this type of sweater with leather leggings, white sneakers, and then add a hat or bandana/headband as an accessory. This piece is best to have in a neutral color like grey or tan.
FLORAL BLOUSE: I don’t normally wear a ton of prints, so florals that are neutral in color and have a smaller print are what I stick to! I don’t get sick of wearing them like I would with a bold floral print. I love pairing a top like this with high rise levi’s and some slip on mules for a chic but effortless look. BLACK TURTLENECK: probably one of my favorite and most worn items every fall and winter. Especially one that is fitted, has a short collar (isn’t bulky around the neck), has a ribbed detail, and is somewhat cropped so that it will be easy to tuck into pants or wear under something. My favorite ribbed turtleneck is this one by ATM. When I worked at Nordstrom this was something that I would put in almost every dressing room. It is literally the softest thing and is made with the most amazing fabric, but is at a higher price point. Here are some others I found that are similar:
WHITE BLOUSE: This is something that has been so hard for me to find in the past. I feel like this season there have been so many good options! This is one of the most classic and timeless items you will have in your closet, so invest in something that you love! Here are some of my current favorite white blouses.
STRIPED BLOUSE: another timeless piece that will last you for years to come! Here are some of my favorites
RUFFLED BLOUSE: I love these because they add a feminine touch to your wardrobe. Here are some of my favroites:
LONG SLEEVE TEES/BODYSUITS: another item that I am constantly reaching for! So cute with high waisted jeans. PS if you haven’t tried a bodysuit yet, this one from Everlane is amazing! It sucks you in and looks so much more put together than just a regular tee!
TEES: YOU GUYS. I buy way too many tshirts and sweatshirts. It’s just all I want to wear! My favorite ways to wear a tshirt are to dress it up with a blazer and skinny jeans, or with a midi skirt and sneakers!
